When Netflix, iPhone meets 4G, wireless hell breaks loose

4G! It’s going to the savior of all of our wireless bandwidth problems! I’ll finally be able to watch my Netflixes and download HD iTunes movies when I’m on the road! Yippee!!!!!

Wait… you mean there’s going to be bandwidth caps?

As PC Magazine’s Sascha Segan just found out, just because you actually have the ability to suck down data faster than a frat boy funneling Pabst Blue Ribbon, it doesn’t mean the wireless carriers are going to let you do it without paying through the nose for it.

Those of you praying that Verizon gets a 4G version of the iPhone and the iPad (or even 4G Android Tablets and Smartphones) and are expecting massive performance improvements over AT&T need to take heed — yes, your performance WILL improve. A lot. But if you expect to be able to watch Netflix movies every day when you’re on the road over your 4G connection for $50 a month, Fuhgeddaboudit.

As I wrote in earlier articles regarding my trials and tribulations with horrendous hotel Wi-Fi and in my recent tests of Clear’s WiMax service, 4G is a great cure for business travelers who actually need to get work done and be productive on the road, but it is not a panacea for multimedia applications and heavy downloads that you’ll encounter with services like Netflix or iTunes.

If you’re looking to become a Verizon LTE subscriber, keep in mind that at the $50.00 a month data plan, it will will buy you 5GB of data. For the business user that emails a bunch of PowerPoints and does a ton of email and needs to use Web, Intranet and thin client applications over VPNs, this should be more than sufficient.

But I’ve now learned the entire thing comes to a screeching halt — or results in a big-ass AMEX bill in service overages if you start trying to do more ambitious stuff with it, such as suck down Netflixes or large iTunes movies.

Sascha Segan determined in his tests that when watching Netflix in Standard Definition, with a 1500Kbps stream, you’ll burn through your entire monthly allotment in under seven and a half hours. With 720p Netflix movies, at 3800Kbps, that’s just under three hours.

That’s roughly equivalent to the same amount of HD iTunes films, about one and a half movies. Hulu+ will burn through your plan in eleven hours. That certainly won’t get you through the month as a business traveler if you’re counting on pulling content down on-demand after hours in your hotel room.

And what about Clearwire? They’ve got “Unlimited” 4G plans. Well that doesn’t work out so well either.

Although the service was able to actually deliver HD streaming content in my tests, in my discussions with actual Clearwire subscribers, the company is quick to rate-cap you the second you start burning through gigabytes of data every day. Have a look, for example, at the actual subscriber monthly data usage report of a user in the Atlanta metro region which i’ve obtained:

As you can see from the chart — which was downloaded by the subscriber from the Clearwire web site customer portal and has been annotated to indicate cause and effect from daily use, the company does not hesitate to cap performance on the following day when heavy streaming activities are detected.

If Clearwire’s current financial situation is of any indication, the company will not be able to sustain even this level of user behavior. They’re going to have to clamp down more and more on movie streaming and heavy downloads.

So what’s the cure to this situation?

Well, there really isn’t any. You can’t expect to do high-bandwidth downloads in 4G and not run into brick walls or make big dents in your wallet.

You’ll want to sideload your iTunes movies when you have Wi-Fi bandwidth at home. Unless Netflix can come up with a comparable DRM-enabled download service like iTunes to side-load your laptop or tablet device on Android, you won’t be able to watch Netfix films on the road on a consistent basis unless you have a ton of money to burn or have access to fast Wi-Fi networks to watch them on.

What I also think this means is that long term, peering and hand-off agreements are also going to have to take place between the 4G carriers and the home broadband carriers such as Comcast and Cablevision which maintain the Optimum Wi-Fi and XFINITY networks.

Alternatively, the big telecom players, such as Verizon, which is both a broadband provider and a wireless provider will have to maintain large networks of Wi-Fi access points so that their customers don’t have to set limits on their usage.

It might also mean that being a Verizon Wireless and Verizon Broadband customer at the same time may have some built-in advantages once the company starts introducing incentives for 4G usage and “Triple Play” deals for broadband/television, VOIP and wireless.

Suddenly, buying your Cable modem and television service from Cablevision and having a Verizon or Sprint smartphone instead of just doing all your business with Verizon might not be such a good idea anymore.

And if the iPhone and iPad does come to Verizon’s new network, you can bet your bottom dollar that iTunes Video downloads and Netflix might even be turned off on 4G from Day One.

Harsh Digital Copyright Bill Stopped -- for Now

Illustration: Lou BeachA single senator on Friday stalled a bill that would give the federal government the ability to shut down websites allegedly participating in copyright infringement.

Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden announced his opposition to the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act at a committee hearing on Friday. The bill was unanimously approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee one day earlier.

The bill has drawn a lot of opposition. Many critics say it will trample free-speech rights (PDF) and could give the government the ability to censor controversial websites such as WikiLeaks.

"Deploying this statute to combat online copyright infringement seems almost like using a bunker-busting cluster bomb, when what you need is a precision-guided missile," Wyden said in an article onRaw Story.

The co-sponsor of the bill, Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, said, "Few things are more important to the future of the American economy and job creation than protecting our intellectual property. That is why the legislation is supported by both labor and industry, and Democrats and Republicans are standing together."

Apparently Leahy wasn't planning on Wyden voicing his opposition which will put the bill on "hold" until the next Congress convenes.

Hopefully the new Congress will give this some more thought.

I get that copyright infringement is a problem, but this bill sounds like giving the government the ability to take out certain streets because shady business deals happen on them.

Maybe it's time to target the problem instead of taking a broad swipe. After all, wouldn't it be easier to take down the entire Internet instead of just regulating a few shady sites?

Just another case of a bunch of "old guys" trying to regulate the series of tubes.

Hacking, Phishing Cases Jump in Hong Kong

Hong Kong organizations need to combat security threats in a collaborative manner, urged Agnes Mak, executive director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council last week after the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) reported that the number of hacking andphishing cases were up 34 percent year-on-year in the first 10 months of the year.

According to the HKPC-managed HKCERT, there were 579 active hacking and phishing cases in the first 10 months of 2010. "As new technologies such as cloud computing and mobile apps for smartphones are increasingly popular, such cases set to spiral upward," said Mak who spoke at the opening of the Information Security Summit 2010 yesterday. $99 iPhone coming next week?

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is just under a week away, and there are more indications that Apple will unveil the next generation of its iPhone device. Rumors out late yesterday point to a 4GB iPhone model that could be an actual $99 iPhone, and the possibility of four different versions of Apple's fabled wonder machine.

Fido leaks
Late yesterday, a road map that is purportedly from Canadian iPhone carrier Fido contains a slide featuring a 4GB iPhone the company will offer for $99 with a three-year contract, according to BoyGeniusReport. The phone featured in the slide is not the actual product, so there are no details of its physical appearance. But according to the text, the 4GB iPhone's features include quad-band GSM, tri-band HSDPA, a 2-megapixel camera, and video chat.

While video chat may seem too good to be true, it does add more credence to the supposed iPhone 4G spare parts discovered last week on the Web site of Chinese parts supplier China OnTrade. According to photographs on OnTrade's site, the front bezel for the new iPhone has enough space near the earpiece to install a front-facing camera.

But then again, iChat for the iPhone is one of those fanboy dream features that are just a little too far-fetched to be true. It's entirely possible Apple could unveil video chat for the iPhone, but I seriously doubt this feature is coming. I hope I'm wrong.

PCS Type Review Certification Board
Adding more fuel to the 4GB fire, Engadget is reporting information from one of its sources that the PCS Type Review Certification Board just approved Apple's application for four different iPhone models, including 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB versions. The PTCRB is a standards board for mobile GSM devices that are to be deployed on North American cellular networks like AT&T's.

More reckless assumptions
So if Apple did go from offering one iPhone flavor to four, what would the price tags look like? Well, if I had to guess I'd say it would look something like this:

List of U.S. Nuclear Sites Inadvertently Posted Online

A U.S. document containing sensitive details about hundreds of civilian nuclear sites across the country was posted online Monday, an apparently inadvertent security breach that had federal officials scrambling yesterday to remedy the mistake.

The document, a draft declaration of U.S. nuclear facilities to the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, contained descriptions of sensitive civilian sites, including the locations of facilities that store enriched uranium and other materials used in nuclear weapons. It was available for about a day on a Government Printing Office Web site before inquiries by news organizations prompted its hasty removal.

Nuclear experts said it was theoretically possible that the document could benefit terrorists contemplating an attack on one of the facilities. Still, because the information was unclassified and most of it is publicly available through other sources, the release generally was deemed more embarrassing than harmful.

"It is probably not that dangerous, but it is a violation of the law," said David Albright, a former U.N. nuclear inspector and president the Institute for Science and International Security, a nonprofit research group in Washington. "You don't want this information out there, any more than you would want a thief to know the location of a vault in your house."

The 267-page draft document was intended as a formal declaration to the International Atomic Energy Agency as part of U.S. obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The Obama administration submitted the document last month to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for technical review.

In a cover letter to Congress that accompanies the document and is posted on the White House's Web site, President Obama states that measures had been taken to "ensure that information of direct national security significance will not be compromised at any such site, location, facility, or activity" as a result of IAEA oversight of U.S. facilities.

The document does not contain information about the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, but it does divulge restricted information such as interior design features of nuclear facilities where fissile materials are stored.

The online appearance of the document was first reported on the blog Secrecy News, written by Steven Aftergood, a senior research analyst at the Federation of American Scientists. He noted that much of the draft's contents were designated "sensitive but unclassified."

Latvian Blondes Hold March To Lift Nation's Economy (VIDEO)

In Latvia, the nation's blondes are marching for the greater good, and it won't even blow out the long end of the yield curve.

Telegraph:Organisers said they were determined to bring positive energy to their country, expected to see its economy contract by 16 per cent this year.

The parade was part of a "Blonde Weekend" which also featured a blonde golf tournament, a little lady fashion show, an evening ball, and a children's drawing competition.

"It's a great time to spend in the parade and contribute to a charity," said Ieva, one blonde spectator.

"Finally something different, something positive because I'm tired of hearing about the crisis," said another, 70-year-old Ausma. Read the whole thing >

Update: Stupidly we didn't even look for a video until a commenter suggested it. Gotta love YouTube. This one features some parade shots, as well as interview (in Latvian). We're not sure what they're saying, but our guess is that it has something to do with global reflation.

Brando's latest HDD dock adds HDMI into the mix

There are apparently an awful, awful lot of people out there with shoe boxes full of spare SATA drives. Somebody is buying all these new HDD docks, and while most surpass the previous editions by adding support for another obscure format of memory card, Brando's latest seems like an actually useful update, adding HDMI and component ports through which it can output video at either 1080i or the always popular 576p. Standard resolutions may not be its strong point, and sadly there's no mention of which video codecs it can unravel, but it does at least support the major flavors of audio files (MP3, WMA, AAC, etc.) and of course will read memory cards and thumb drives to boot. No, a bare drive may not look particularly appealing while rattling away on your entertainment center, and at $69 you're not far from the price of a Windows Media extender or the like, but don't let such practical concerns dissuade you from adding this unique focal point to your home theater.

Windows 7 HD and SSD Performance Analyzed

Windows 7 is undoubtedly the most exciting new operating system to come out of Microsoft within the past decade--and with good reason. The user interface is superb, gone are many of the oddball Vista quirks, and the operating system is light and snappy, marking a massive 180 degree shift away from the heaviness and bloat of Vista. Despite the fact that it's based on many of the same core Vista elements, Windows 7 is a different beast, and should be looked at in a fresh new light.

As with any new operating system release, there are a lot of questions with regards to how it will perform on various hardware configurations--one of the more interesting ones being related to disk performance. One of Windows Vista's cardinal sins, in our opinion, was that the operating system was constantly thrashing the system's hard disk. Whether it was trying to do some sort of smart caching or indexing files for searching, it never felt like the operating system would settle down. The disk was always active and performing reads or writes, which meant that whenever you had to actually run a program, you had to fight for disk resources.

This was noticed fairly early on, by large swaths of users, who complained about slow disk performance. Microsoft would eventually release an update to their disk caching algorithms embedded within Windows Vista Service Pack 1, which dramatically helped performance and snappiness of the operating system. However, the problem never felt completely resolved, and in the minds of most users, the damage was done. Windows Vista was, and still is, perceived as a slow operating system in the minds of most power users. One of the first things which most notice about Windows 7 is how "light" the operating system feels. It's quick to load up, it does not spend much time thrashing the hard disk once you're inside the interface, and your hard drive quickly settles down and lets you start working. It feels quicker, due to this fact, and as such, the entire computing experience on Windows 7 is much more enjoyable. All users, from those who use low-end netbooks to high-end workstations, will immediately benefit from Microsoft's new, more lightweight disk usage algorithms.

Today we're going to look at how various types of disks perform under Windows 7, both of the traditional platter based variety and new solid state disks. We're not only curious about how disk performance changes between the operating systems, but if Windows 7's new solid-state specific optimizations and tuning give you even greater performance compared to Vista.

We aren't quite calling this the turnaround of the decade just yet, but with just six months to go until 2010, AMD is doing its best to make a late run for said crown. In years past, Advanced Micro Devices had become notorious for delaying products. Now, they're doing their best to right the ship by unveiling a product's availability some five months ahead of schedule. In CPU years, five months is an eternity.

The new six-core AMD Opteron (codenamed "Istanbul") is shipping out to OEM customers today, and the chip should be available to consumers by the end of this month. Hailed as the world’s first six-core server processor with Direct Connect Architecture for two-, four- and eight-socket servers, this chip has up to 34 percent more performance-per-watt over the previous generation quad-core processors in the exact same platform. Over the next few weeks, systems will begin to creep out from Cray, Dell, HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems, and support from motherboard and infrastructure partners will follow suit. Also of note, HE, SE and EE versions of the six-core AMD Opteron processor are planned for the second half of 2009.

For those concerned about upgrade costs, chew on this: six-core AMD Opteron processors leverage existing platform infrastructure and a low-cost, power-efficient DDR2 memory architecture. Nice going, AMD -- let's hope this is the start of an all new way of doing business.
